The story
Everyone who sat on a last bench played this. Two pens on a desk, you flick yours into theirs, and whoever's pen goes off the edge has lost. Nobody taught it. The kid next to you did it once and you copied him.
The part people forget is that it was played for keeps. You put your pen down, and if you lost, it was theirs. That is the whole game here. Eleven kids on the bench, the Trimax at the end of it, and nothing to win but pens.
We did not draw the pens. We photographed them, and the game reads the barrel out of the photograph. The Megatop wobbles because it was always top-heavy. The Trimax will not roll because its barrel is a triangle. A guessed colour and a guessed weight drift from the pen you actually held, and then it is not your pen any more.
- The blackboard keeps the score, in chalk, next to the thought for the day.
- Win the championship and it turns around: the class comes to take the Trimax off you.
- Your 045 can never be lost. Everything else can.
